When is the Best Time to Buy Your Travel Insurance?

By Graham S Doyle

It is probably best to purchase your travel insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday. Leaving it until the last minute can leave you with the chance that you may forget to get it and also it can take a few days for the policy to be put into place by the insurance company. You do not want to risk not being covered as soon as you head off for your dream holiday.

If you are going to buy a comprehensive travel insurance package then it is a good idea to have this in place before you plan to go away. That way, if anything were to happen to prevent you from travelling, you would be covered for a refund or an alternative holiday. One reason for cancelling your trip would be if you were to fall pregnant. Sometimes people will book their holiday far in advance to get the best prices. If your holiday were to fall when you were due to have your baby you would have no alternative but to cancel. A family emergency, the death of a relative or extreme weather conditions are all other reasons why you might need to cancel your holiday and all of these are unpredictable.

The last thing you would want when you are getting ready for your holiday is for something to happen which would prevent you from travelling, especially if you knew that you were going to lose all the money you had paid for your trip. At least if you had a quality travel insurance policy in place, you would not have this added worry.

If you are booking your holiday with a travel agent, the chances are that they will offer you travel insurance at the same time. Whether you choose to take them up on this offer is up to you. Many people prefer to get their own travel insurance arranged as it can work out less expensive. A lot of other people book their holidays direct now on the internet so they will have to arrange their own travel insurance. If you do book your holiday online, then you will probably be familiar with looking for insurance companies and getting the best deals.

As long as you buy your travel insurance early enough and make sure it has adequate cover, you can relieve the stress of worrying about your trip being cancelled. If you leave everything until the last minute you may not get the cover you require.

Always remember to check exactly what your policy covers with your insurer.
